The March 1998 block was an 8” Four Patch.

The finished block measures 8” square (1/2” unfinished)

We made an 8-inch block using “homespun” type stripes and plaids.  The block is a 4-patch with half-square triangle block units.  The squares were dark/medium in the center with the same light fabric on the corners OR light/medium in the center with the same dark on the corners.  Use two different fabrics for the center triangles.”

Instructions:

  1. Cut 2 light blocks, 1 dark block (A),
    and 1 dark block (B) 4 7/8” each.
  1. With dark A and a light block together, right sides facing, draw a line diagonally from corner to corner. Sew 2 seams, each 1/4” from the diagonal line on either side of it. Then cut along the line. Press the two blocks open.
  1. With dark B and a light block together, right sides facing, draw a line diagonally from corner to corner. Sew 2 seams, each 1/4” from the diagonal line on either side of it. Then cut along the line. Press the two blocks open.
  1. Sew the blocks together so that the light triangles are on the four outer corners and the dark A triangles are opposite each other.
Your finished (unfinished) block should measure 8 1/2 inches.  Be sure to leave the seam allowance on the block, DO NOT cut it to the eight inch finished size -- as the “finished” measurement represents the block size after it is sewn into a quilt top.
