February 2001’s block was Hearts on Square

The block measures 12 inches square.  (12½ inches unfinished).  This is a square block using bright red for the hearts, white-on-white for the background, and your choice of colors for the center using three shades of the color you choose.  This should provide a somewhat scrappy look.

Instructions:  Use good quality, 100% cotton pre-washed fabrics.  Follow the instructions below for each block.

1. Choose 3 fabrics of the same color – 1 light, 1 medium, and 1 dark shade.
2. From the dark fabric, cut 4 rectangles 2½” x 4½” each.  From the white-on-white cut 8 squares 2½” each. 
3. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the white squares.  Lay one white square on one dark rectangle right sides together like in illustration 1.  Sew on the drawn line.  Cut away excess fabric ¼” from the sewing line and press seam allowance toward the dark fabric.  Repeat steps for other side of rectangle as in illustration 2.  Repeat steps for other 3 rectangles. 
4. From the light colored fabric, cut 4 rectangles 2½” x 4½” each.  From the dark colored fabric cut 8 squares 2½” each. 
5. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the dark squares.  Lay one dark square on one light rectangle right sides together like in illustration 1.  Sew on the drawn line.  Cut away excess fabric ¼” from the sewing line and press seam allowance toward the dark fabric.  Repeat steps for other side of rectangle as in illustration 2.  Repeat step 5 for other 3 light rectangles. 
6. You should now have 4 sets that look like illustration 6.  Sew these together into 4 squares that look like illustration 7. 

7. From the red fabric, cut 12 squares 2½” each.  From the white fabric, cut 8 squares 1 ½” each.Also, from the white, cut 4 squares 2½” each. 

8. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 1½” white squares.  Lay one white square on one red square right sides together like in illustration 3.  Sew on the drawn line.  Cut away excess fabric ¼” from the sewing line and press seam allowance toward the red fabric.  Repeat step 8 for other 7 red squares. 

9. Join these 8 finished squares with the other 4 red 2½” squares and the white squares as illustrated in graphic 4.  This should make 4 assembled squares that look like the heart in illustration 5. 

10. Cut one square 4½” of the medium colored fabric. 

11.Assemble the squares into rows, then into a block as illustrated in the graphic to the left.
 
 

Your completed unfinished block will measure 12½ inches. 
Twelve inches after sewn into a quilt!
