January 2000’s block was Lincoln’s Platform.

The finished block measures 14 inches square (14 1/2 inches unfinished).

Instructions:  Use a white-on-white fabric for the light and a navy blue print for the dark.  Use good quality, 100% cotton prewashed fabrics.

Block of the Month

  1. Cut thirteen 2 1/2 inch squares from the white-on-white fabric.
  1. Cut eight 2 1/2 inch squares from the navy print fabric.

  1. Cut two 4 7/8 inch squares from the white-on-white fabric AND from the navy print fabric; then cut these diagonally.  Sew these triangles together to form four 4 1/2 inch squares.

  1. Cut four 2 1/2 by 6 1/2 inch strips from the dark blue print.
  1. Sew a white-on-white 2 1/2 square to each side of a 2 1/2 inch navy print square.
  1. Sew a navy print square to a white-on-white square.

  1. Sew #6 to the left side of a 4 1/2 inch square and add the strip from step #5 to the top, as shown in the illustration.
  1. Assemble the block as pictured; sew a navy print strip to each side of the remaining 2 1/2 inch square.  Sew the other navy print strips between the corner squares, as shown.

Your finished (unfinished) block should measure fourteen and one-half inches.  Be sure to leave the seam allowance on the block, DO NOT cut it to the 14 inch finished size -- as the “finished” measurement represents the block size after it is sewn into a quilt top.
